WE NEED YOUR STORY

Much of what has been shared here has focused on the Soldier Settlers, mainly because there is plenty of available material on this subject to date.

But out of 100 years of ‘Robinvale’ history, before 1924 there was ‘Bumbang’ and Euston of course!  The soldier settler story for Robinvale only started in 1947.  Then came multiple rainbows of off-shore ‘new’ Australians starting with (in my time), the Italians and the Greeks.  Of course our island cousins were not far away, then our Asian neighbours not far behind.  Add to this a smattering of Scandinavians and a variety of Northern Europeans.  All in all a richly mixed bag of at least 30 cultures  are now represented in the town’s story.  Multi cultural Robinvale backroads-2018

But of course the first part of the story HAS to belong to the First Nations Peoples who were already here!  How did all this affect them, and what did it mean for the people already here when this influx of newbies commenced?  This may be the most difficult part of the history to unearth – in many ways.  According to the local history on the Robinvale-Euston website, this is what we know: Indigenous Culture  Bumbang Island

To begin with, the above website claims that five clans reside in Robinvale Euston area, i.e: Tati Tati , Wiradjuri, Muti Muti, Wamba Wamba and Latje Latje.  It would be interesting to learn more about this as there is no discernible date on the site, or any attribution to the source of this info.

What is is YOUR story – you may not think that it matters, but no story is too small.  Many people came to Australia to make a better life for their children, was that true in your case?  So often, the safety and opportunity offered by Australia are taken for granted by those of us who are born and lived here, and perhaps not always fully appreciated without knowing the history that precedes us.
